Pembrey (Llanelli), Carmarthenshire

This is somewhere I used to go with friends when I was younger but haven't visited for years!! It's been on the to-go list for a while and finally managed to squeeze in a visit over the Easter holidays and I'm so glad that we did - what a fab place to go for the day!!

What's There?

There's so much to do at Pembrey these days so you can totally see why so many people park up there for the day! There is a massive amount of flat green grass and plenty of parking for you to set up camp; lots of people were there with gazebos, blankets and picnics and clearly planning on staying there all day, and night! (The park doesn't close until 10pm!) We spent a large part of the day there and didn't manage to do half of the things that they have on offer so we will definitely be heading back in the summer to do some more of what's on offer there.

What Can You Do?

You could go to Pembrey and spend nothing, you could also go an spend a fortune! I'll start with what you can do for free!

1. FLAT GREEN GRASS! I know Cooper would just spend hours kicking a football or passing a ball around here in the summer and although there was quite a lot of traffic coming in and out in some parts of the park, there were other parts where there we no cars at all so I would feel that he was safe to have a run about.

2. BIKING! Coops couldn't ride his bike before our trip to Pembrey, he actually learned to ride here on Easter Sunday - it was the perfect place to practise! There's lots of paths around the park for biking and you can even hire a family bike, like those ones you see abroad or in Butlins for £15 an hour. Cooper took his scooter but that was a bad move, it wasn't scooter terrain at all because, even though it was flat, lots of the paths were gravel or bumpy so not great for the scooter.

3. ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND! There were two fantastic playgrounds at Pembrey, one side for older children and another for smaller children. We could have spent hours here to be fair!

4. BEAR TRAIL! This was relatively new and probably my favourite part of the park. There was an Easter Egg hunt there the day we went (check the website for other themed days coming up over the year). There was so much to explore on this walk; it probably took us about an hour to do, and that included stopping to play along the way as well. It's a completely flat walk and we got the pram around most of it with no problem; I did have to drag it backwards right at the beginning over the gravel, but once you're past that part you're fine! There were loads of quirky little obstacle courses and play areas along this trail and Cooper loved it!

5. CEFN SIDAN BEACH! We didn't go to the beach at all but I did run down to have a look. It's a MASSIVE beach, one of the biggest I've seen in Wales, Pendine Sands vibes. There were toilets and a cafe on the beach as well which is always a must for me if I'm spending the day somewhere!!

So, you could definitely make a free day (after paying for parking) out of it if you want to, but we did do some of the paid activities there too so I'll go through those next!

1. MINI LAND TRAIN! There's a cute little train that you can sit on and have a ride around a small track. I think it was either £1.50 or £2.00 each. There's a few little figures and scenes to see along the route but I guess the main attraction of the Miniature Railway is the excitement of sitting on a mini train!

2. CRAZY GOLF! There's a really good Mini Golf there with 18 holes - it took us ages to get around it to be honest! Luckily, there were some benches and a little hut selling tea/coffee/snacks for everyone else who was just watching! It cost £6.00 for an adult and £5.00 for a child.

3. FUNFAIR! There's a small funfair there throughout spring and summer with your typical bungee jump trampoline, little carousel, hook a duck and trampolines - I think we paid £3.00 for 5 minutes on the trampolines.

There's lots more to do there too that we didn't get round to doing this time:

  1. Foot Golf - £4.00 for a child and £5.00 for an adult. This looked great and we would have done it had we not played football golf the day before in Haverfordwest!

  2. Disk Golf - £4.00 for a child and £5.00 for an adult. Basically, you throw frisbees at a target with this activity.

  3. Toboggan - 1 ride is £3.50 and 3 rides are £7.00 - for anyone who remembers the toboggan ride at Oakwood, it's pretty much the same as that!

  4. Tubing - Basically, sit in a rubber ring and slide down the ski slope! You do have to wear gloves and have long sleeves and trousers to do this; something to consider if you're going in the summer! This was a bit more expensive with children paying £8.50 and adults £15.00 (does look a lot of fun though!)

  5. Skiing and Snowboarding - They have a dry ski slope there with different options for usage (they offer lessons too I believe)

You didn't need to pre-book any of the activities, you just turned up and paid on the day.

AMENITIES

There were plenty of toilets dotted around the park and various places to eat and drink as well. Yr Orsaf is the cafe sort of at the centre of the park and the food looked lovely here. They also had a great outdoor seating are that would keep you dry in the rain and shaded in the summer. There's a cafe by the ski slope and a beach kiosk by Cefn Sidan beach too so you won't go hungry there (although most people seemed to have brought their own picnics!) Dogs are allowed pretty much everywhere around the park (other than in the actual playgrounds). Parking is currently (peak time) £4.00 for 2 hours or £8.00 for all day (it's only £4.50 all day between 1 October and 31st March).

So, if all of the above hasn't convinced you to go then I don't know what will. We will 100% be going here more often now that we know all it has to offer!
